London's seven-year countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games came to a crescendo with a imaginative, whimsical and dramatic celebration of the host country.
London 2012 opening ceremony was celebration of British film, TV and music, from Mary Poppins to Harry Potter, Lionel Bart to Soul 2 Soul.
To open the ceremony, children popped balloons with each number from 10 to 1, leading a countdown that climaxed with Bradley Wiggins, the newly crowned Tour de France champion.
With his musical partners Underworld, Boyle paid homage to some of the greatest British hits of the last fifty years spliced together everything from Jerusalem to the The Jam’s Going Underground to Dizzee Rascal's Bonkers and even taking in Simon May’s theme tune for EastEnders.
He even included a sequence showing a stunt version of the 86-year-old monarch carried to the stadium by helicopter and parachuting in.
